About the artist:

Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Torrie Kakakaway is a proud member of Treaty 4 and Carry The Kettle; he was raised in the Nakota clan with strong culture knowledge.

Torrie was born profoundly Deaf and learned sign language at public school. He discovered his artistic talent in grade 11 when he enrolled in an International Baccalaureate art course and started to focus on Indigenous arts. Torrie is a self-taught artist, with a focus on mixed media; he has created a diverse range of works: from plexiglass art to screen-printing to painting on drums to collages to oil paintings.

Torrie came out as Two-Spirit in his late 20’s and reclaimed this identity after being forced by his schools not to identify this way. He went traveling across the U.S. and met Two-Spirit people and the communities to learn who he is, while taking his arts to the next level of Indigenous contemporary art style. Currently working with Making Treaty 7 production for an upcoming theatre project as set designer and visual artist, and currently working with a few artists for upcoming collaborations to focus on a Truth and Reconciliation commission and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) collaboration including Two Spirit arts. Torrie continues to live in Regina where he is working in the arts. Torrie is proud to be Nakota, Two-Spirit, Deaf and an artist.

Né et élevé à Regina, en Saskatchewan, Torrie est fier d’être membre du Traité 4 et de Carry The Kettle ; il a été élevé dans le clan Nakota, avec de solides connaissances culturelles.

Torrie est né profondément Sourd et a appris la langue des signes à l’école publique. Il a découvert son talent artistique en onzième année, lorsqu’il s’est inscrit à un cours d’art du Baccalauréat International et a commencé à se consacrer aux arts Indigènes. Torrie est un artiste autodidacte qui se concentre sur les techniques mixtes ; il a créé une gamme variée d’œuvres : l’art du Plexiglas, de la sérigraphie, de la peinture sur tambour, des collages et des peintures à l’huile.

Torrie s’est révélé Bispirituel à la fin de la vingtaine et s’est réapproprié cette identité après avoir été forcé par son école à ne pas s’identifier de cette façon. Il a voyagé à travers les États-Unis et a rencontré des personnes bispirituelles et les communautés pour apprendre qui il est, tout en amenant ses arts au niveau suivant du style d’art contemporain Indigène. Il travaille actuellement avec une production Making Treaty 7 pour un projet théâtral à venir en tant que scénographe et artiste visuel, et travaille actuellement avec quelques artistes pour des collaborations à venir qui se concentreront sur une commission Vérité et Réconciliation et une collaboration avec Les femmes et les filles autochrones disparues et assassinees (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, MMIW), y compris les arts Bispirituels. Torrie vit toujours à Regina où il travaille dans le domaine des arts. Torrie est fier d’être Nakota, Bispirituel, Sourd et une artiste.
