Emily Akerman is a Deaf artist living and working in Toronto. Her practice moves across painting, illustration, and creative writing, shaped by lived experiences of deafness, identity, and belonging. Studying at OCAD University and working in the Risograph Studio, she translates everyday moments of silence, miscommunication, and advocacy into vivid, expressive forms. Working under the name Poofy, she embraces play as a way to hold complexity and tenderness. Rooted in the De’VIA movement, her work honours Deaf histories while carving space for new narratives. Projects such as Eye Get Misinformed and Dear Hearing People, a hand-printed risograph zine, invite empathy through humour, intimacy, and care.

Artist Statement

With her recent collection All My Deaf Works (so far), Emily Akerman highlights a decade-long dream of creating works to raise awareness of the Deaf community. When she first applied to OCAD in the midst of the pandemic — with all masks and no lips in sight — a purpose was cultivated through an invisible exclusion. Through her practice she brings forward the stories, tensions, and visual languages that shape Deaf experience, expanding her understanding of inclusion, exclusion, and the politics of visibility within Deaf communities.

Emily Akerman est une artiste sourde vivant et travaillant à Toronto. Sa pratique traverse la peinture, l’illustration et l’écriture créative, et s’inspire de ses expériences vécues liées à la surdité, à l’identité et au sentiment d’appartenance. En étudiant à l’Université OCAD et en travaillant au studio de sérigraphie, elle transforme des moments du quotidien marqués par le silence, les malentendus et la défense des droits en formes visuelles vives et expressives.

Travaillant sous le nom de Poofy, elle adopte le jeu comme une manière d’accueillir la complexité et la douceur. Ancrée dans le mouvement De’VIA, sa pratique rend hommage aux histoires sourdes tout en ouvrant la voie à de nouveaux récits. Des projets tels que Eye Get Misinformed et Dear Hearing People, un fanzine sérigraphié imprimé à la main, invitent à l’empathie par l’humour, l’intimité et l’attention.

Avec sa récente collection All My Deaf Works (so far), Emily Akerman met en lumière un rêve nourri pendant une décennie : créer des œuvres visant à sensibiliser le public à la communauté sourde. Lorsqu’elle a présenté sa candidature à l’Université OCAD, en pleine pandémie — alors que les masques omniprésents rendaient les lèvres invisibles — un sentiment d’exclusion invisible a fait émerger un véritable sens à sa démarche artistique. À travers sa pratique, elle met de l’avant les récits, les tensions et les langages visuels qui façonnent l’expérience sourde.
