About the artwork:
Still today, the AUDISM in 2024 – let’s talk about the hurt derived from the attitude and belief that our sign languages are not important, our culture disowned, our people looked upon as savage and infantile, our Deaf children taken away and melt into mainstreamed culture defined as normal by all of you who believe spoken languages are superior, that the capacity to audibly hear with your God-Ears is superior.
Our Deaf Hearts are crying. Where are our Deaf schools? Where are our Deaf children?
Where are their rights to access sign languages? Are they punished for using sign languages today, at this very moment… just like we were punished when we were children? Are they also raped of their rights to the theory of mind, to their self-esteem, to their identity, to their history, to their language? Will their wounds and traumas repetitively fall into our understanding and helping hands?
We all have been there. We strike by luck and with gratitude, we meet recovered Deaf survivors who are willing to take us in the cradle of their hands. So that we can be mended, healed and strengthened, then in turns, we gently cradle the following survivors close to our hearts.
Yesterday, today and tomorrow, we have arrived at times where we have no choice but to voice a protest, to say that we have had enough. The Deaf Community have had enough.
Do you understand it? Do you feel it? Do you jump into it?
Fight with us. Be an accomplice and become the cradling hands with us.

About the artist
Pamela E. Witcher is a multidisciplinary artist, interpreter, translator, cultural mediator and museum curator. Pamela’s artistic expertise includes visual art, videography, and signed music. Pamela overlaps old and new discoveries that have the power to change views and ideas. Pamela proclaims ,“When Deaf communities create information through art and documentation, our existence becomes concrete, known and valued.” Pamela creates in numerous artistic realms, one influences the other and art lays bare the dynamics of oppression and the strength and story of Deaf peoplehood.

Aujourd’hui encore, l’AUDISME en 2024 – parlons de la douleur découlant de l’attitude et de la croyance que nos langues des signes ne sont pas importantes, que notre culture est reniée, que notre peuple est considéré comme sauvage et infantile, que nos enfants sourds sont enlevés et fondus dans la culture dominante définie comme normale par tous ceux d’entre vous qui croient que les langues parlées sont supérieures, que la capacité d’entendre de façon audible avec vos oreilles divines est supérieure.
Nos cœurs de personnes sourdes pleurent. Où sont nos écoles pour les Sourds ? Où sont nos enfants sourds ? Où sont leurs droits d’accès aux langues des signes ? Sont-ils punis pour avoir utilisé les langues des signes aujourd’hui, en ce moment même… tout comme nous avons été punis lorsque nous étions enfants? Sont-ils également violés dans leurs droits à la théorie de l’esprit, à l’estime de soi, à l’identité, à l’histoire, à la langue ? Leurs blessures et leurs traumatismes tomberont-ils répétitivement entre nos mains compréhensives et secourables ?
Nous sommes tous passés par la. Par chance et avec gratitude, nous rencontrons des survivants sourds rétablis qui sont prêts à nous prendre dans le berceau de leurs mains. Afin que nous puissions être soignés, quéris et renforcés, nous bercerons doucement, à tour de rôle, les survivants suivants, tout près de nos cœurs.
Hier, aujourd’hui et demain, nous sommes arrivés à des moments où nous n’avons pas d’autre choix que de protester, de dire que nous en avons assez. La communauté sourde en a assez.
